James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombones, which is also sometimes known by its full title, God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse. This production, written in 1927, is based on a book of poems by Johnson patterned after traditional African-American religious oratory. This work has delighted audiences in theaters, churches and other venues for over 80 years and never grows old. Our production will not only feature the junior choir from St. Francis Church, under the direction of Francis Richardson, but each night this production will move to a different church and the guest performer will be a pastor or minister who will deliver the opening piece, Listen Lord – A Prayer and the sermon, The Prodigal Son. The other sermons in this work will be delivered by our remaining cast members, Claudette “Cookie” Allens, Tex Turnquest, Erma Albury, Arthella Issacs, Marcel Sherman and Onike Archer.
